Amuwo-Odofin Council Chairman Intervenes in Protest by Festac Town Traders Against Federal Housing Authority
Displaced traders at the Agboju/Festac Town 2nd Gate Market have staged a protest over an alleged plot to chase them away from a temporary landfill site, off Second Avenue, by 22 Road Junction.
The aggrieved traders who currently occupy the 1st Avenue/2nd Gate intersection, waved placards with various inscriptions, including "No Market, No Election", as they threatened not to take part in the 2027 general election unless the authorities intervened and secure their place of business.
The traders were first moved to the temporary site few years back, after they were dislodged from the roadside along the Festac Town Second Gate entrance to make way for the reconstruction of the road.
During the protest on Friday, October 16, 2026, one of the market leaders, NONYE IKENGA, recalled that the landfill site was allocated to them with the consent of late Iyaloja of Lagos, Alhaja ABIBAT MOGAJI, grandmother of the current Iyaloja General, Chief Mrs. FOLASADE TINUBU-OJO, wife of the Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority, FHA, OYETUNDE OJO.
NONYE IKENGA, popularly known as HAJIA around the market, said the traders were meant to occupy the temporary location pending the completion of the Festac Town Main Market which has been undergoing development at 6th Avenue.
However, she told reporters that their members were surprised after they were asked to vacate the site by certain unnamed officials linked to the Federal Housing Authority, claiming the location had been sold.
The protesting traders were also joined by some residents of Festac Town who complained about the health risk they face due ruptured underground sewage drainage system in the area following the ongoing road rehabilitation project in the area.
From the Agboju/Festac Town Second Gate Market, the protesting traders marched to the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government headquarters.
They were received by the council Chairman, LANRE SANUSI, flanked by other council officials, and he promised to take up the Festac Town market issue with the management of the Federal Housing Authority.
