The Disciplinary Committee of the Nigeria Police Force has indicted ASP USMAN NUHU and three other policemen for gross violation of the Force Firearm Regulation over the extrajudicial killing of twenty-eight-year MENE OGIDI in Effurun, Delta State.
The Disciplinary Committee also recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP USMAN NUHU and the three others from the Nigeria Police Force, as well as for them to face trial for alleged homicide before a civil court.
The Inspector General of Police, OLATUNJI DISU, presented the findings and recommendations of the Force Disciplinary Committee to newsmen at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
This comes less than twenty-four-hours after USMAN NUHU and the three others were transferred from the Delta State Police Command to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
IGP OLATUNJI DISU also sympathized with the family and friends of the deceased, assuring that the trial of ASP NUHU USMAN and his team members would be pursued to logical conclusion.
Meanwhile; the Nigerian Law Society has commended the Inspector General of Police, OLATUNJI DISU, for the speed of the disciplinary against ASP NUHU USMAN and three others over the murder of MENE OGIDI in Effurun, Delta State.
In a statement by is National Publicity Secretary, LILIAN UCHE, the Nigerian Law Society also called for the transparent prosecution of ASP USMAN and his other team members.
UCHE noted that the NLS received with cautious commendation the decisive steps taken by IGP DISU in ordering the immediate dismissal and criminal prosecution of ASP NUHU USMAN and three other officers implicated in the brutal and unlawful killing of MENE OGIDI.
The NLS spokesperson observed that “The unfortunate incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, represents a gross violation of the right to life as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and a betrayal of the sacred duty imposed on law enforcement officers.”
She noted that the Society views the extra-judicial execution of a citizen as a heinous crime that strikes at the very heart of Nigeria’s democracy and the rule of law.
LILIAN UCHE said the NLS further noted that the IGP’s emphatic declaration that "no uniform is a license to kill" and aligns itself fully with his assertion that the era of impunity within the Force must end.
“The swiftness of the internal disciplinary process, resulting in the recommendation for dismissal from the Force, sets a critical precedent. However, the Society stresses that this internal measure, while necessary, is only the first step on the path to comprehensive justice.
Furthermore, LILIAN UCHE said the NLS calls for the following immediate and transparent actions:
1. Guaranteed Transparency in Prosecution: The Society demands that the forthcoming criminal prosecution for unlawful homicide is conducted with utmost transparency, speed, and in strict compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. The legal process must be seen to be uncompromised by any form of internal or external interference.
2. Expedited PSC Ratification: We urge the Police Service Commission (PSC) to expedite the ratification of the dismissal order, ensuring that the officers are formally severed from the Force without delay to face criminal charges as civilians.
3. Comprehensive Rights Audit: Beyond this single case, the NLS calls for a holistic audit of the Police Force’s adherence to Force Order 247 and all standard operating procedures governing the use of firearms. The wanton disregard for these protocols suggests a systemic rot that requires urgent and deep-rooted reform.
LILIAN UCHE said the NLS would be deploying its observatory mechanisms to monitor this case from dismissal to final prosecution, to ensure that the promise that “justice will not only be done but will be seen to be done” is fully kept, adding that “The Nigerian Law Society stands resolute in its defence of fundamental human rights and will continue to hold the state and its agents accountable to the people of Nigeria.”
In the meantime, the extrajudicial killing of twenty-eight-year-old MENE OGIDI by trigger-happy police officer, ASP NUHU USMAN, sparked street protest in Effurun, Delta State, soon after the culprits were transferred to Abuja on Wednesday.
The protesters were mobilized under the banner of the Youth Wing of the Urhobo Progressive Union, led by its President, BLESSED UGHERE.
Addressing journalists at the scene of the protest, UGHERE said they want the police to go beyond the dismissal of the policemen, adding that disciplinary action against the erring policemen was not enough.
