CAS Confirms Senegal's Appeal of CAF's Verdict Upturning AFCON Title
Senegal have filed an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland over the decision by the Confederation of African Football to strip them of the Africa Cup of Nations title.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed receipt of Senegal’s appeal against CAF and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation in a statement.
CAS Director General MATTHIEU REEB said the court understands that teams and fans are eager to know the final decision, and it will ensure that arbitration proceedings are conducted as swiftly as possible.
The Senegalese are hoping to overturn the CAF decision handing the AFCON title to Morocco, on the ground of the initial walkout by some of their players in protest at a penalty awarded to Morocco during the final match on January 18.
CAF announced on March 17 that it had upheld an appeal by the Moroccan Football Federation, saying that Senegal infringed tournament regulations by walking off.
As a result, CAF declared that Senegal had forfeited the match, and converted their one-zero victory into a three-zero defeat in favour of Morocco as champions.
