Coroner's Inquest into CHIMAMANDA's Son Controversial Death Suspended

The Lagos State Coroner’s Court sitting at the Igbosere Magistrate Court on Lagos Island has suspended further hearing in the inquest into the death of twenty-one-month-old NKANU ADICHIE-ESEGE.

Late NKANU was the son of popular author CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE and her husband, Doctor IVARA ESEGE, who died in controversial circumstances on January 7, 2026, while receiving treatment from two health facilities in Lagos.

The child died after he was referred from Atlantis Paediatric Hospital to Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital for medical procedures, while arrangements were being made to transfer him to John Hopkins Hospital in the United States.

The suspension of the Coroner’s inquest followed a directive from the Chief Coroner, Justice MOJISOLA DADA, through lawyers from the office of the Lagos State Attorney-General.

The Coroner’s Court was informed that hearing is suspended pending the outcome of a meeting between the State Attorney General and all parties involved, which is scheduled for May 12, 2026.

However, the Coroner Magistrate ATINUKE ADETUNJI faulted the intervention of the State Attorney General, stressing that the court was independent of the Ministry of Justice.
