Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road: Tracka Kicks Over Delayed Clarifications on FOI Request

A nongovernmental organization involved in project tracking in Nigeria has accused the Federal Government of failing to provide clarifications on issues of accountability surrounding the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project.

The group known as Tracka said it submitted a Freedom of Information request to the Federal Ministry of Works, through the office of the minister, DAVE UMAHI, since March 2, 2026, but with no response till now.

Tracka noted that beyond the headlines, the total project cost remains unclear, in addition to limited public disclosure on procurement processes.

Tracka further identified that the demolitions and displacement of businesses and livelihoods along the project path, with concerns around compensation.

In a statement on its social media handle, the NGO observed that the coastal road projects also pose environmental risks to coastal communities, wetlands, as well as long term climate impact.

It also noted that the phased commissioning of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project raises questions about political optics versus actual project completion.

Tracka stated that the lack of transparency on the Coastal Road project weakens public trust and raises further concerns about how large-scale infrastructure projects are being managed.

It maintained that public projects of the magnitude of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road must be open, accountable, and people-centred, stressing that citizens deserve to know the true cost, the process, and the long-term impact.
