Lagos Monthly Sanitation Exercise Returns With Strict Enforcement

The reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Lagos State holds tomorrow, Saturday, April 25, 2026, across the fifty-seven local government areas and local council development areas, between the hours of 6.30am and 8.30am.

The wife of Lagos State Governor, CLAUDIANA IBIJOKE SANWO-OLU, and the Lagos State Head of Service, OLABODE AGORO, are expected to lead different teams, including one made up of wives of Lagos State officials, to monitor the sanitation exercise across the state.

Consequently, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has charged all residents of the state to stay back at home on Saturday morning and participate in the cleanup exercise.

The Commissioner in charge of the Ministry, TOKUNBO WAHAB, said residents are expected to clean their environment and clear the drains in front of their compounds before going out for other businesses.

WAHAB also said that the state government has mobilized enough evacuation and compactor trucks across the five divisions of the state for the exercise.

He assured that officials of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, would be strategically positioned to immediately evacuate all solid waste and debris to dumpsites.

The Commissioner further said that major transport unions operating in Lagos State have pledged to withdraw their vehicles from the roads during the period of the sanitation exercise, in a show of support for the programme.

TOKUNBO WAHAB urged Community Development Associations (CDAs) to mobilized their members to ensure the success of the exercise, just as he assured that all LGAs and LCDA in the state and some private companies are fully on board for the sanitation exercise by providing tools and vehicles to cart away the refuse generated.

WAHAB warned that environmental health officers and other enforcement officials at both state and local government levels would be deployed round the neighbourhoods to monitor the level of compliance.

He said the health officers would not hesitate to issue default notices to houses and individuals who fail to participate in the cleanup exercise, who would then be arraigned in court for breach of the 2017 Environmental Management Law of Lagos State and associated legislations.
