2027 Elections: APC Berates Opposition Parties, as INEC Extends Deadline for Submission of Candidates Lists
The All Progressives Congress, APC, says it has successfully completed the process for the submission of its candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections.
The APC said it completed the process within the initial deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, despite the large number of candidates contesting for the various elective offices on its platform.
APC National Publicity Secretary, FELIX MORKA, mocked opposition parties that were unable to meet the deadline, saying it was bases on their request that INEC had to extend the deadline to July 14, 2026.
MORKA noted that while INEC acted within its statutory powers and administrative discretion in extending the deadline for parties to upload names of their candidates, the decision was due to the failure of opposition parties to manage their internal processes.
He said the development provides a clear indication of the weakness of the opposition parties and raises questions about their operational capacity.
INEC, over the weekend, approved the extension of the deadline for submission of candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly Elections by three days.
Instead of the initial deadline of Saturday, July 11, 2026, which was approved under the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election, INEC says the final day for political parties to submit their list of presidential and National candidates is now Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, MOHAMMED KUDU HARUNA, said the decision to extend the deadline was based on an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, on behalf of political parties who were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the scheduled timeline.
In a statement confirming the development, HARUNA noted that the extension underscored INEC’s commitment to ensuring inclusivity in its processes, while acting within the ambit of the law.
He said all political parties are enjoined to take advantage of the extension window and ensure that all necessary candidates’ details are uploaded before the expiration of the new deadline.
