2026 Law Week: NBA Eti-Osa Advocates Knowledge Transfer Between Nigeria and Canada

The leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association, Eti-Osa Branch, is pushing for the domestication of some important principles of legal practice obtainable in Canada.

These include enforcement of professional responsibility, which is said to be far stricter in Canada compared to what is obtainable in Nigeria.

Other identified unwholesome practices by some Nigerian lawyers that need to be curtailed include Ambulance Chasing and high-jacking of briefs.

These issues are expected to receive attention during the 2026 Law Week celebration, being put together by the NBA Eti-Osa Branch.

The NBA Branch Chairman, OLANREWAJU ABADINA, said that is part of the objectives of inviting the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Manitoba, Canada, MATT WIEBE, to the Law Week celebration.

OBADINA said MATT WIEBE would be interfacing with the Attorneys General and Commissioners of Justice of the six Southwest states, who have also confirmed their participation in the Law Week celebration.

The Eti-Osa Branch Chairman also said there would be a session that would bring together real estate stakeholders to discuss trends and challenges, including the rising cost of rent and the rising cost of processing land and property transactions in Lagos State.

OLANREWAJU OBADINA said recent increases in the cost of obtaining land titles and processing property documents could worsen the burden on residents already struggling with high rents.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the NBA, Eti-Osa Branch 2026 Law Week Committee, TAYO ISMAIL, also highlighted another session of the event, which would focus on exploring the potentials of the legal practice as a viable business, as well as the requisite technological tools designed to equip lawyers to compete globally.
