4 Detained Over Lagos Island Mob Lynching
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspects of the death of one person in a mob action on Freeman Street in Lagos Island on Wednesday last week, September 2, 2026.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent ABIMBOLA ADEBISI, confirmed the development in a statement, and identified the man killed in the mob action as BASIT KOLADE.
Superintendent ADEBISI said investigations revealed that BASIT KOLADE was travelling with his spouse, from Ebute Metta towards Lagos Island in a black Lexus Jeep, when a motorcycle allegedly collided with the vehicle from behind.
The PPRO said the argument between KOLADE and the motorcycle rider attracted a group of individuals in the area, who then attacked the driver with dangerous weapons.
While the spouse was rescued by some women in the vicinity, KOLADE was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
She named the four suspects so far in detention as KHALID RAFIQ who is twenty; GAFAR RAHIM and SAMOS MOMOH who are both twenty-one years old, as well as thirty-three-year-old IBRAHIM AZEEZ.
The Police spokeswoman said the matter is being treated as a homicide case, and it has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for further investigation and appropriate legal action.
She said the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, TIJANI FATAI, has directed that all persons found culpable in the incident should be identified, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
