BUHARI DIES AT 82, PRESIDENT TINUBU DECLARES 7-DAYS NATIONAL MOURNING, SUMMONS EMERGENCY FEC, ORDERS FLAG FLOWN AT HALF-MAST
President BOLA TINUBU has declared seven days of national mourning in honour of late former President MUHAMMADU BUHARI, who died yesterday at the age of eighty-two.
President TINUBU directed that the Nigerian National Flag across the country should be flown at half-mast over the seven days period of mourning.
President TINUBU also directed the Vice President, KASHIM SHETTIMA, and his Chief of Staff, FEMI GBAJABIAMILA, to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the body of the former president back home.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, BAYO ONANUGA, announced that BUHARI died today in London at about 4.30pm yesterday, following a prolonged illness.
ONANUGA said President TINUBU had spoken with the widow of the former president, AISHA BUHARI, and offered his deep condolences.
Earlier, a former presidential spokesman, GARBA SHEHU, also announced the death of his former boss in a statement on behalf of the family, saying that he died at a clinic in London.
Late MUHAMMADU BUHARI was elected twice as Nigeria's President in 2015 and 2023. He also served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.
Meanwhile, President BOLA TINUBU has summoned an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council for tomorrow, Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of late President MUHAMMADU BUHARI.
Writing on his personal social media handle, President TINUBU also declared that the Federal Government would accord late President BUHARI full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country.
He said late President BUHARI was to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman, adding that his legacy of service and sacrifice endures.
The President recalled that BUHARI served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, first as a military leader, and later as a democratically elected President.
He said as president, BUHARI stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.
President BOLA TINUBU extended his condolences to the government and people of Katsina State, most especially the people and traditional leaders of Daura Emirate.
