DEMOCRACY DAY: GROUP CALLS FOR LIFTING OF EMERGENCY RULE IN RIVERS STATE

Stakeholders in Rivers State have continued to lend their voices to the call on President BOLA TINUBU to lift the state of emergency and reinstate all elected public office holders in the spirit of Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration.

Recall that President TINUBU had on March 18, 2025, invoked his powers under the Nigerian Constitution to proclaim emergency rule in Rivers State, effectively suspending Governor SIMINALAYI FUBARA, his Deputy and the thirty-two members of the House of Assembly, due to a protracted political crisis in the state.

The Convener of Port Harcourt-based Youth and Environmental Advocacy Centre, Dr FINEFACE DUMNAMENE, wants President TINUBU to revisit his action and restore democratic structures in Rivers State, as the emergency proclamation undermines the democratic process and the will of the people.

In a statement to mark Democracy Day, Dr DUMNAMENE noted that “June 12 marks a pivotal moment in our democratic journey, symbolizing the struggle for democracy, freedom, and good governance.

“At YEAC-Nigeria, we remain committed to promoting good governance, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria. As we celebrate our democracy, we urge Nigerians to reflect on the progress made so far and the challenges that lie ahead. We emphasize the need to protect and promote democracy, human rights, and good governance, while strengthening the fight against corruption in our country.”

The youth and environmental sustainability activist is also of the opinion that “Corruption remains a significant obstacle to Nigeria's development, and we call on the government to redouble its efforts in the fight against corruption.”

He urged urge Nigerian citizens to hold leaders accountable and demand transparency in governance.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting democracy, good governance, and human rights in Nigeria. We urge Nigerians to remain vigilant and demand better governance from our leaders.”
