FIBA Women’s World Cup: S.Korea Breaks Nigeria’s Competitive Winning Streak
South Korea, Thursday, March 12, 2026, broke Nigeria’s competitive winning streak in women’s basketball, with a 77-60 defeat of the African champions at the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Villeurbanne, France.
South Korea, who had earlier lost 76–49 to Germany's women's national basketball team in their opening match, produced a strong and disciplined performance to claim the win at the Astroballe.
The defeat was the first competitive loss for Nigeria women's national basketball team, popularly known as D’Tigress, since they fell to the United States at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The loss came just a day after Nigeria began the qualifying tournament on a high note with an impressive 70–37 victory over Colombia women's national basketball team.
Despite the setback, the game served as a tough early challenge for coach Rena Wakama’s side as they continue their campaign in the tournament.
The Nigerian team will aim to bounce back quickly when they face the Philippines in their third game on Saturday, which will be the opening fixture of the day.
Later that evening, South Korea women's national basketball team will take on Colombia women's national basketball team as both sides look to boost their chances of finishing strongly in the standings of the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament.
