INEC PROCEEDS WITH RECALL OF KOGI CENTRAL SENATOR, AS PETITIONERS FULFILL WITH PRELIMINARY REQUIREMENTS

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is now ready to begin the process for the recall of Sen Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central Senatorial District from the National Assembly.

This comes about 24-hours after INEC initially said that the petitioners behind the recall process failed to meet one of the legal requirements, as they failed to provide telephone and contact addresses of their representatives.

However, in a latest update from the headquarters of the commission, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Committee on Information and Voter Education, Sam Olumekun, said the petitioners have now supplied the contact addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses of their representatives.

Olumekun disclosed in a statement that the information was provided in a letter the petitioners addressed to the Chairman of the Commission dated today Wednesday 26th March 2025.

“As provided in Clause 2(a) of the Commission's Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024,” Olumekun also stated that a letter had been written to notify Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan about the receipt of the petition for her recall, through her official address.

The INEC National Commissioner said the same letter has also been copied to the presiding officer of the Senate and published on the Commission's website.

He the next step is to scrutinise the list of signatories submitted by the petitioners to ascertain that the petition is signed by more than one half of the registered voters in Kogi Central Senatorial District.

Commissioner Sam Olumekun said the screening would be done in the coming days, adding that the outcome, which would be made public, shall determine the next step to be taken by the Commission.
