INEC Registers 3.4m New Voters, as Chairman Demands Airwaves Sanitization Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it has registered over three-point-four million new voters in the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise nationwide.

This information was contained in the Week Thirteen update released by INEC in Abuja yesterday, which shows that Three Million, Four Hundred and Forty-One Thousand, One Hundred and Twenty-One new voters have completed their registration as of April 3, 2026.

However, INEC noted that the number of new registered voters remains provisional, subject to data clean-up through the deployment of the Automated Biometric Identification System.

Meanwhile; INEC Chairman, Professor JOASH AMUPITAN, has charged broadcast media outfits to sanitize the airwave through the dissemination of truth, as against serving as a megaphone for chaos.

Professor AMUPITAN warned that broadcast media organisations must guard against the spread of misinformation, especially as it concerns the conduct of elections.

AMUPITAN stressed that the integrity of the 2027 General Election will depend significantly on how responsibly Nigeria’s airwaves are managed.

He was speaking at the General Assembly of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, held in Abuja, stressing that the information space has become a critical battleground in modern elections.

The INEC Chairman noted that the greatest threat to credible elections may no longer be physical disruptions, but the rapid spread of false information amplified through unverified broadcasts.

While acknowledging the constitutional guarantee of freedom of expression, Professor AMUPITAN maintained that such freedom must be exercised within the framework of the law.
