INEC Targets Dec 15 for Completion of Voters Register Clean-up, to Retain AI-Enhanced Photos
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it has commenced the cleaning of the preliminary National Register of Voters.
This follows the identification of suspicious records, including some names with photographs suspected to have been generated with the help of Artificial Intelligence, AI.
INEC’s Director of Information and Communication Technology, LAWRENCE BAYODE, confirmed the development during an interview on television over the weekend.
BAYODE said the Automated Biometric Identification System deployed by INEC has already identified about two hundred and sixty-eight records in the Voters Register, which are undergoing reviews.
He explained that some voters registration officials deployed by INEC are believed to have used their official credentials to create questionable profiles.
The INEC ICT Director said such persons exploited a registration option designed for persons with disabilities who do not have complete fingers or have no fingers.
However, the INEC ICT Director maintained that not every photograph that were enhanced with AI would be removed from the Voters Register, adding that genuine photographs improved with AI tools on mobile phones would be retained.
He said INEC would complete the necessary verification, adjudication and data-clean-up processes before certifying the final Register of Voters on December 15, 2026.
