US Realigns Visa Processing to Lagos, Other Regional Hubs

Nigerians and other residents in the country, seeking to apply for United States visas, will no longer require traveling to Abuja to do that at the US Embassy.

Beginning from tomorrow, August 1, 2026, the United States Mission in Nigeria says visa applicants will have to schedule appointment with the US Consulate in Lagos.

A message posted on the social media handle of the US Mission in Nigeria indicates that the change is in line the Department of State’s realignment of visa operations in Africa to regional hubs.

It says the move is part of a long-standing practice that strengthens national security by promoting more uniform screening, vetting, and adjudication standards, as well as improving efficiency and adjusting to shifting U.S. immigration policy priorities and objectives.

“Effective August 1, 2026, several U.S. Embassies and Consulates in Africa will no longer be offering routine visa services, including U.S. Embassy Abuja. Citizens and residents of Nigeria who wish to apply for a U.S. visa must schedule an appointment and pay the required visa fee at U.S. Consulate Lagos, the new designated location.”
