GUILD OF EDITORS CAUTIONS ABOUT DANGER OF THREAT AGAINST MEDIA, DEMAND ACTION TO CURTAIL HARDSHIP

The leadership of the Nigerian Guild of Editors has expressed deep concern over the complex challenges facing Nigerians, and called on the government to take steps to address issues bordering on the economy, insecurity, and governance.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors also warned against attempts by the authorities to weaken the media, stressing that a weak media may fail to hold those in power accountable, limit access to information, and create a disconnect between the public and reality.

The Guild condemned what it considers as growing hostilities against media organizations and professionals by some security agencies and non-state actors, calling on government to partner with the media to deepen and protect democracy.

While noting the Federal Government's efforts to respond to economic and security challenges through reforms, the NGE observed that the impact of these reforms was becoming unbearable for poor citizens.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its Standing Committee Meeting in Owerri, Imo State, jointly signed by its President, EZE ANABA, and the General Secretary, ONUOHA UKEH, the Guild urged the federal government to put in place more safety nets to address economic hardship, inflation, and poverty.

It also called attention to the education sector, noting the sorry state of education in the country and urged governments at all levels to prioritize education by improving funding, infrastructure renewal, and welfare for educators.
