President TINUBU Sends Constitution Alteration Bill for State Police to Senate

President BOLA AHMED TINUBU has forwarded a Constitution Alteration Bill to the Senate for the establishment of state police.

The proposed legislation was contained in a Presidential communication dated June 15, 2026, which the Senate President, GODSWILL AKPABIO, read in plenary today.

President TINUBU said the bill is designed to provide a legal framework for a dual policing structure in Nigeria, with states allowed to establish and operate their own police services, alongside the federal police.

The President noted that the proposed constitutional amendment is a critical component of ongoing reorganization of Nigeria’s policing system to enhance security and better protection for citizens.

He noted that communities, municipalities, and local government areas would play more active roles in policing responsibilities under the new arrangement.

After reading the President’s letter, Senator AKPABIO referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review, with a directive to report back tomorrow, Wednesday.

The Senate President further noted that the implementation of the proposed legislation would be done in phases, through constitutional alteration and enactment of Acts of Parliament.

He said the Constitution Alteration Bill transmitted by the President builds on the earlier proposal, as it come two weeks after an executive bill on state police passed second reading on the floor of the Senate.
