TINUBU Seeks Amendment of ACJA, as Senate Approves N403.3B for Police Trust Fund
President BOLA AHMED TINUBU has asked the National Assembly to amend the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, as part of efforts to strengthen criminal justice administration in the country.
President TINUBU made the request in a letter to the Senate, seeking the repeal and reenactment of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.
The proposed amendment of the ACJA includes the provision for a Criminal Justice Monitoring Council to oversee the implementation of the law in federal courts and courts within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
According to the Presidential communication read on the floor of the Senate during plenary, President TINUBU said the proposed legislation is designed to address challenges that had hindered the speedy dispensation of justice.
The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters for further legislative actions.
Meanwhile; the Senate has approved Four Hundred and Three-Point-Three Billion Naira Budget for the Nigerian Police Trust Fund for two consecutive years, from 2025.
The fund is broken down into One Hundred and Seventy-Point-One Billion Naira for 2025 fiscal, and Two Hundred and Thirty-Three Billion for the 2026 fiscal year.
The approved budget is meant to strengthen policing and support the fight against terrorism, kidnapping, and other security challenges across the country for two years.
It covers personnel costs, capital projects, and overhead expenditures aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.
The move comes amid a rising spate of crimes across Nigeria, with citizens calling for authorities to tighten security in the nation.
